Let’s start with the central element of christmas decorating, the Christmas tree.
Set up more than one tree!
This of course implies that you have room in your house, but if you have the space, you can put a smaller tree in the kitchen, in a bathroom, or a bedroom. This little extra tree can really help you unify the house. This does not mean that you have to buy more trees, you could use branches from the bigger tree, that you might not need. Or you can buy a few extra branches, they might even give you a few branches for free where you buy your tree. Place the branches in big pots, and hang ornaments on them. You have created an instant mini Christmas tree.
There is no such thing as too many ornaments on a tree. If your ornaments were selected with care and spaced evenly the more you have, the better it looks. Remember that spacing is the key.
silver-pine-conesYou think you don’t have enough decorations for the tree and you would have to buy a lot of them. If you live in an area where you can go find pine cones, gather a few and spray them with metallic spray. You can also use dried leaves, or other light natural findings. Natural elements are always in whether decorating for Christmas or anytime.
Instead of garland, you could use ribbon streamers. Attach the ribbon at the top of the tree and wind it down and around the tree. You could use different ribbon width for more effect.
Tradition has always made us decorate the top of the Christmas tree with a star or an angel. This year try something else. Do you have a family heirloom or something that represents your family, involve the kids in thinking what could make a good tree topper, I guarantee that they will have all sorts of ideas.
natural-pinecone-ribbonOne sure way to make your tree different from previous years is to replace the hangers. Most ornaments come with little wire hangers, and we usually just use them. For a different look replace them all with a little ribbon. You could use one color for all of them or two colors and vary the placement.
You can make your own garland. Just a few ideas to get you started: popcorn, cranberries, vines, small pine cones, seeds, macaroni or pasta with fancy shapes. Again those can be sprayed with metallic paint for a stunning look.
Ornaments can be made from ordinary objects. If like me you have a box with hundred of keys and you have no idea what they belong to, here is a great way to finally use them. They can be sprayed or dipped in glue and glitter. You can use glue and glitter on almost any small object, golf balls, small toys, paper clip chains, corks.
origami-ornamentIn japan, people make small objects with paper, this art is called origami. Your library has no doubt a lot of books about origami, and you can make light and beautiful ornament with paper.
Pipe cleaners are an inexpensive material that can be turned into ornaments as well. What can you make with pipe cleaners? Stars, angels, snow flakes, the easiest candy canes.
Make the Christmas tree a family tree! Use photos of family members, wallet size pictures are ideal, but you could use other pictures as well. Use scrap-booking scissors to cut out shapes and hang them on the tree. This not only personalizes the tree but can also bring family members who will not spend Christmas with you seem closer.
upside-down-christmas-treeAnother innovative idea is the upside tree. It is the latest fad but it is not new as an idea as they were used by European Christians as far back as the middle ages. While we still consider it a novel idea in our times we can see some real advantages to it. Small children and pets can be kept away from the ornaments and it frees up floor space.
Armed with these new ideas go out and try some or tell me the innovative ideas that you have found to get your decorating for Christmas more original.
